How do you help a brand maintain consistency across multiple channels and platforms?
Meyer: I think consistency starts with knowing what your brand stands for, not just having a style guide. Your voice and presentation can change across platforms, but your core message and values should remain consistent. That’s especially important when working with partners or other organizations. You want those relationships to reinforce your brand identity, not dilute it.
Albin: I specialize in Challenger Brand – those with a strong POV about what needs to change in the category. That POV must be executed at every touch point across the brand from its identity to its sales strategy to its messaging.
Can you share a rebranding project that taught you valuable lessons about brand identity?
Meyer: My background is actually in direct-response marketing, so some of my best lessons about branding have come from testing what customers actually respond to. One of the first products I launched was CholesterBlock, a cholesterol-management supplement. We included an at-home cholesterol test with the first shipment. If customers sent us a picture of their initial results, we’d send them a second test to use after 30 days. That approach worked incredibly well. Rather than just making promises, we were giving customers a way to measure their own results. Then we tried something interesting. We offered to actually pay customers $50 if they completed the process and their cholesterol hadn’t gone down. You’d think that would make the offer even stronger. But it actually hurt response. My takeaway was that the original offer built credibility because it delivered something genuinely useful. Adding the financial incentive may have made it feel more like a marketing gimmick. It taught me that the strongest brands build trust through authentic value, not just clever marketing promises.
Albin: Alpha H was / is a clinical skincare brand that relied very heavily on its ingredient / formula story – the use of Alpha-Hydroxy Acids. At the time of its launch that was a unique formula feature. Over time, AHAs became table stakes. Alpha-H was founded by a dynamic women – a real leader in the category. We used that concept of category leadership to redefine what Alpha meant – being an Alpha Female. Someone who is confident and courageous. Alphas are a combination of awareness and adaptation. They build alliances and advocate for others. They exhibit “subtle strength” – leverage their drive and ability and bring others along. We wove this definition through every aspect of the brand from product to service to philanthropy. This rebrand taught me that brands can evolve without losing their essence.
What strategies do you use to build and maintain brand loyalty in a competitive market?
Meyer: I think loyalty is earned by consistently delivering value and giving people a reason to connect with your brand beyond the product itself. Price and promotions can attract customers, but trust and shared values help build lasting relationships. I believe brands have a tremendous opportunity to strengthen those relationships by supporting causes their customers already care about, provided the commitment is genuine.
Albin: Stick to your POV and don’t go chasing shiny objects. update the product, expand the audience, explore a new channel, advance the technology. You can evolve & update everything but your belief. Audiences can tell a brand that believes in something from one that’s pretending. Those are the brands that get rewarded with loyalty
What’s your approach to navigating a brand crisis and rebuilding trust with audiences?
Meyer: I believe the most important things are transparency, accountability, and taking action. Customers understand that businesses make mistakes. What they don’t appreciate is being misled or ignored. A brand needs to acknowledge the problem, communicate what it’s doing to address it, and follow through. Ultimately, trust is rebuilt through actions, not messaging.
Albin: Brands that go astray often abandon their belief system. I try to keep my brands on the railroad tracks. And when/if they lose their mojo, I bring them back to the beginning. The essence of what they stood for.
