How long have you been in your industry?30 years
Why did you choose your industry?I was interested in the broadcasting as a whole. I love storytelling and I'm fortunate to get up every day and look forward to my work.
Who are your typical clients?Federal government agencies, Fortune 100 companies, associations, and non-profits.
What do you like best about being in this industry?I like that the video industry is different every day. Technology comes and goes, but AI or any other technology will never replace the craft of telling a story.
What are common problems you see?The industry's common problem is that technology has made it so easy to create videos and animations, but the art of writing and telling a story is being compromised.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?I advise clients to look for a video production company that can produce in many different styles and platforms. You also want a company with experience telling stories for various business sectors.
When is your busy season? Our busy season tends to be in August and September because the federal government fiscal year ends on September 30th.
What keeps you up at night? What keeps me up at night is cash flow. Also, where will the next client or business lead come from?
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business? We market RaffertyWeiss Media through various channels, including email marketing, LinkedIn, Google Ads, and word of mouth.
How involved are you in the community?I have been involved in the community with a few nonprofit boards (Catholic Business Network, Washington Jesuit Academy) and volunteering at some at various high schools in the Washington DC area.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?I have two favorite not for profit charities - FourBlock (helps veterans transition into civilian life) and the Washington Jesuit Academy (an all boys school that helps at risk youth from grades 4 through 8).
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?I would advise someone in the business to be a sponge, say "YES," and then figure out how to do it. Take chances and always be willing to help someone. There is never a job too small.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What I enjoy doing in my free time is spend time with my wife and family.
